Holed up in Fairbanks

It is a fact that we have been in Alaska for 4 days as of now. It took 15 days to cover the 4700+ miles we poked along on and currently holed up in Fairbanks where we'll be for a couple more days waiting on a rear shock for the BMW which should have been in today, no biggie.

It's nice to be stationary for a few days and slept hard last night. Today changed out the fluids in the bikes, fixed stripped threads in the drain hole of the swingarm, and meeting cousin Marge for dinner over Korean in about 20 minutes. Trip is going fabulous and all is well.

A random pick of pics in no particular order.

Somewhere in B.C. where we had a tasty cinnamon roll.

The last bit of actual dusk we witnessed through the top of the tent at Liard Springs in BC on the 22nd.

Some fog on the Dalton Highway coming back on Tuesday afternoon. We took it easy and rented a vehicle for the Prudhoe Bay trek to enjoy the scenery, worth every bit of it.

Tundra outside Prudhoe Bay which resides on the Arctic Circle.

Reading by the sunlight Monday night at the Caribou Inn Prudhoe Bay.

The famous Deadhorse Sign of Prudhoe Bay. The road goes no farther north.

Luckily we were able to jump on tour bus to the Arctic Circle through Prudhoes security gates. Here's us goofballs getting our feet wet in the Arctic Ocean.

Prudhoe Bay installation. There aint a whole lot to do but it is pretty cool. Like being on a moonbase. Cos I know what being on a moonbase is like.

Just one of many caribou outside of Prudhoe Bay.

I can't see the road. The 3am sun in my eyes approaching Prudhoe Bay. It was a heck of a beautiful drive out through the mountains and tundra. We had great weather in Prudhoe, clear skies and relatively warm weather which we were told was rare.

Climbing Atigun Pass. This was a fun climb with the 4800 elevation.

Couple of riders we spoke to while pulling over to see the 360 view of the mountains before reaching the tundra.

I gave the big rigs wide birth on Dalton. Pulled over to watch a couple descending Atigun.

Travelers at Coldfoot needing a lift south while we were heading north.

The Arctic Circle

Cliff Swallows in Delta Junction... I think. They make a pretty cool nest and there were A LOT of those birds. They were nested under the eaves of a gas station.

Group picture with Cousin Marge and Kiely.

Entering the famous Dalton Highway.

Bear poop

Ice on the river.

Going through border check entering Alaska. Casper up ahead trying to tell the guard he understands little English.

Heading up the wonderful road to Beaver Creek Yukon from Destruction Bay. This was some very rough road. This is where my shock gave up from all the dippy do's in the sliding road and the numerous gravel spots. They make you earn your entry to Alaska.

And here is Casper. We met him at the Alaskan sign. He's a fellow from Brazil who traveled south to the tip of South America and heading to Prudhoe on a 400cc Honda. Been out for a 107 days. Great guy, even though our communication was very limited, we communicated with charades, drawings, West Virginian Spanish. We rode on and off together to Fairbanks and ate lunch. Casper where ever you we wish you well.

And after 15 days we made it. Casper shot this pic.

More road heading to Beaver Creek from Destruction Bay in Yukon.

I have no idea where this pic is taken.

A nice lady that let us move to the front of the stopped traffic heading out of Whitehorse at the construction spots with a pilot car.

Frying eggs at Wolf Creek camp spot in Whitehorse.

And the potatoes and bacon. Groceries for breakfast cost about $30. Did I mention Canada is expensive?  I talked with a fellow around my age from Victoria BC, he said it's costly for him as a Canadian.

Taking a walk in Whitehorse.

Another road shot from the Airhead.

Entering Yukon. Whoo Hoo. I was looking forward to this as much as Alaska.

Dinner at the camp spot in Whitehorse. Potatoes, polish sausage, peppers, onions and creole.

Not sure where this is either.

Buffalo/Bison hanging out along the road.

Mom and I enjoying the thermal pools in Liard. Felt absolutely marvelous.

I'm not exactly sure where this is either. Outside of Whitehorse some distance.

Teslin Lake if I remember correctly riding with my fellow goats.

Dad 'wistfully' pondering.

Ah, my fellow goats, walk with me.

I liked this dog, I think he liked me too.

Absolutely wonderful and more to come

  1. I thought "going to Alaska" meant Juneau or something. I didn't realize you were going practically to the North goddam Pole. (Here's a map of the Dalton Hwy for those of us who don't know where you are: http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib/blm/ak/fdo/dalton.Par.83804.Image.-1.-1.1.gif)
