As of now...

Just to play catch up, this initial post is a brief overview.

Currently in Virginia, Minnesota. Been 4 days out, left on the 10th of June.

Dad, Mom and myself have covered about 1200 miles in route for Fairbanks AK, not in any rush we aim for maybe 400 miles a day.

Dad's bike is a 2011 H-D Electra Glide Ultra Classic

and mine is a 1988 BMW R100.

Routes as of the last 4 days:
Day 1:
Ravenswood, WV to Jackson, MI
Rts 33, 23, 68, 281, 15/127
Experienced heavy rain from Lancaster to Waldo OH where supposably the best bologna sandwich resides, but we didn't find out. Ohio has fantastic 2 lanes to ride and well kept roads.

These litter the Ohio landscape.

Day 2:
Jackson, MI to Mackinaw City, MI
Rts: 50, 66, 131, 31
Getting out of Jackson, Michigan proved to be pretty similar to Ohio. Once we got around Lake City, MI the scenery turned more wooded and the birch seemed to be more in numbers.

Coming into Petoskey, MI.

Day 3:
Mackinaw City, MI to Ironwood, MI
Rts: 2, 77, 28
Crossing the Mackinca Bridge to the Upper Peninsula, I consider this the first true day of traveling. 2nd time riding the U.P. and just as good as the first.

Crossing the Mackinac. 1 half is grated and can prove to be tricky as the grate and the tire tread can mate and lead the bike in small side to side wobbles.

View from the bridge looking at Lake Huron. Lake Michigan is on the left heading north.

Wooded scenery for miles and miles on end. 20 to 25 miles of straight stretches that almost hypnotize.

Made it to Ironwood and camped in the city park.

While at the campground met and hung with Wynn from Vancouver with his DIY and interesting motorcycle trailer. Truckbed tool chest and rear end of bicycle. Gets 6K out of a bicycle tire.

Day 4:
Ironwood, MI to Virginia, MN
Rts: 2 and 53
Fast day and quick ride to Duluth, MN from Ironwood. We started the day late by not leaving the campground till 11:30 and messed around town getting provisions. Made it to Duluth by 3 or something like that, thinking of staying there but with it being early we took advantage of the daylight and headed north making it to Virginia MN.

Breakfast

A great sign for an establishment in Virginia.

Tomorrow we're heading to International Falls MN. From there we need to check our routes. We're planning on route 2 heading west. Wynn mentioned some closures on his way through. We're flexible, we may cruise west through Canada if no go on rt 2.

  2. Houstan,

Good to see you are on the road. We don't see many airheads make it to AK anymore. I'm in Montana, but will be back in Fairbanks next week for a few days. Hope our paths cross. Good luck.
